London Britain Olympics Summer July-27 Opening Cermony

Vacation in Maine August 2012 Summer

Somes Sound Acade National Park.

For centuries, mariners have taken advantage of the protected waters of Somes Sound. If we viewed Mount Desert Island from the air (a look at the Acadia map will do), we would notice north and south aligned gouges scooped out of the land as if by a very large hand. Indeed, in this case, the hand was that of a huge, slow moving continental glacier over a mile high,... two miles thick in some places. When this giant glacier finally retreated and melted, it left rounded mountain tops, long lakes, many boulders, and seven mile long Somes Sound - widely described as the only fjord on the east coast of the United States with its deepest point at 175 feet (50 m). In recent years, this description has been somewhat downgraded to the “fjard” because it lacks the extreme vertical topography and the oxygen deprived sediments as the Norwegian fjords. Destin, Florida Vacation Trip

Destin, FloridaThe Florida Panhandle is a coveted place that Southerners would prefer to keep to themselves. With a 100-mile stretch of sugary sand that fronts the Gulf of Mexico, and a fair share of golf and tennis, who can blame them? In Destin, the heart of the Panhandle, wake up early in the morning and take a stroll with the pelicans and sandpipers on the beach just as the fishing boats head out to sea. Feel free to join them and drop your own line to catch snapper and grouper. Later, discuss your day's adventure at one of Destin's dockside cafés. The blues and country music is always live and the fish and oysters always fresh. Stay at the Wingate, where room prices, with continental breakfast, start in the double digits in the off-season.

Belize Travel Vacation

Belize

Central America's only English-speaking country is a great destination for adventurous families who enjoy diving and snorkeling, as well as those interested in learning about the archeology and history of this culturally rich (and affordable) country. While probably not ideal for the youngest travelers, Belize has so much to offer older kids. Caving, tubing through the stalagmites of an underground river, or zip lining through the rainforest are memories your children will never forget.
